You have likely heard the terms laminated and tempered bandied about during conversations regarding glass. What exactly do they mean, and what’s the difference? Knowing helps you make an informed choice for your next glass project.

These two terms refer to ways in which glass is made safer, stronger and more suitable for a variety of applications.

Laminated Glass

A laminated glass panel comprises 2 sheets of glass with one or more plastic resin layers between them. In the event the glass is broken, rather than shattering everywhere, the resin layer holds all the pieces together. It’s UV-resistant, sound-resistant, and bullet-proof. Additionally, it’s more expensive than tempered glass.

Laminated glass is a popular choice for the office because of its sound-proofing and UV-resistant qualities. Laminated glass windows let in a lot of natural light, and laminated glass office walls and dividers provide the perfect space for office meetings and getting work done without distraction. It’s common to see glass office windows, doors, walls and dividers in commercial spaces throughout the city.

Tempered

Tempering is a process in which a substance, in this case glass, is heated to a very high temperature, then quickly cooled. Tempered glass is much stronger than regular glass and more durable. If the glass is broken, it crackles into small granular pieces.

Tempered glass is a popular and elegant choice for glass railing for the home or office. It lends a light and airy atmosphere, while making a room feel large and posh. One thing to be aware of when considering a glass stair railing installation is tempered glass cannot be cut once it’s formed. Therefore all measurements must be precise and taken before the glass undergoes the tempering process. Hire professional glass railing contractors to ensure this important job is done correctly.
